「你係自己命運嘅主人,自己靈魂嘅船長」
我學到將工作視為mutual choice而唔係義務——呢個改變咗我哋處理壓力、長工時同困難關係嘅方式,令我哋成為更好嘅leader。
「I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.」- Henley。呢個係一句好powerful嘅statement,來自英國詩人William Ernest Henley(1849–1903)嘅短篇維多利亞時代詩作「Invictus」。隨住時間過去,我越嚟越appreciate呢句statement喺我personal同professional life入面嘅意義。今日等我分享一啲相關經驗。
喺過去三年,我哋喺APAC嘅team exponentially增長(由10人到120+人,跨5個office)。我花大部分時間聆聽同coaching我哋嘅team members,幫佢哋solve佢哋嘅problems/concerns,涉及team dynamics、client relationships同individual stressors。好多呢啲challenges似乎好tough同emotional,特別係當team member要OT或者喺extended periods嘅stress下面做嘢。我留意到即使我哋嘅star performers嘅judgement喺呢啲情況下都開始get clouded;佢哋做嘅decisions唔係「normal」。
有啲人有difficult client relationships嘅問題,而其他人可能有internal issues好似唔知decisions係點做出嚟嘅或者冇夠team members做嘢。
「我哋所有人都有唔同嘅choices,一直都有而且永遠都會有,因為我哋有power去control自己嘅thoughts」(Napoleon Hill)呢個想法guide住我做嘅每一件事。我truly相信我嘅工作係我自己同公司/client之間嘅partnership。每日,我哋雙方都make choice去繼續呢個partnership。同任何worthwhile嘅relationship一樣,佢必須對每一方都有benefit先可以長久。呢個belief令我可以think more clearly,即使喺pressure下都make better decisions。
有意識咁choose工作更長時間
我想強調,我哋嘅文化唔involve要team OT,除非係unavoidable嘅emergency。話咁講,如果一個team member想put in extra hours,而佢哋healthy同冇personal issues,我係fine嘅。呢度主要嘅distinction係做一個conscious decision vs 被「asked」或者simply跟住你老闆講嘅做而冇think about。
當我啱開始嘅時候,我每週log大約55到60個鐘。呢個包括喺日間工作完成後喺屋企寫呢個blog。雖然困難,但佢係paid off嘅,我從來冇後悔put in extra work。我哋有另一個outstanding嘅team member,我從佢身上學到好多。喺佢career嘅頭三年,佢每週工作超過60個鐘,跟一個visionary founder做嘢,佢嘅approach、story telling、presentation skill進步得極之快。我完全唔及佢。佢之前話我哋知佢唔後悔頭3年花咁多時間做嘢,因為呢個係佢自己嘅choice,佢由中獲得咗invaluable嘅experience。
用respect同dignity對待每一個人
我哋嘅belief係無論對錯,每個人都應該被respect同dignity咁對待。而且每個人都應該嘗試用professional嘅方式溝通,因為咁樣更effective。「a drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall.」- Dale Carnegie。
無論你係manager/director定team member、client定agency方,呢個就係我哋應該對待每一個human being嘅方式。如果你同任何人(internal或external)做嘢嘅時候佢哋behave/communicate得唔professional,唔好keep quiet,escalate佢,搵一個suitable嘅方式去address。雖然emotion high嘅時候practice呢個唔容易,但我哋應該try :)
Senior managers同directors:將我哋嘅team members視為intelligent/brilliant嘅human beings,有能力make自己嘅choices
最後,如果你係line manager,essential嘅係將你incredibly talented嘅team members當做成年人咁對待,佢哋有能力make自己嘅decisions。你嘅team members需要學識點樣為自己make choices——呢個喺佢哋personal同professional life都適用。我哋唔會永遠make到correct嘅decision,但我哋可以由mistakes中learn。如果某啲decisions嘅結果會absolutely terrible,咁by all means offer guidance畀你嘅team。喺任何其他情況下,empower同respect每個individual member會make嘅decisions。
睇住某人make poor decision可以好frustrating,但作為佢哋嘅manager,你要學識let them choose for themselves同face the consequences。呢個就係佢哋grow同避免喺未來make catastrophic mistakes嘅方法。
