Knora: a comedy app with almost no UI

Knora is a free iPhone app for one situation: you are having drinks with friends and somebody wants a laugh. You shake the phone, a short bit plays end to end, and you go back to the conversation. It is 18+, and it is a personal project rather than a product I sell.

The bet: the product is the moment, not the app

Every screen, button and feed in an app like this is an interruption. So there is one gesture and nothing else: shake. No feed to scroll, no library to browse, no account to create, no settings to get right before the first laugh. The phone is a third object at the table, not a destination — and that is also why there is no share button yet. The bet is that the phone gets passed around, not that the link does.

What that forced

  • Every shake has to be instant

    There is no loading screen to hide behind, so bits are written and voiced ahead of time and served from a catalog. Live generation is the fallback, not the path.

  • The server picks the comic method

    With no browse screen, the app sends no style and no model choice. The backend draws one method per bit, writes several drafts, and keeps the best one before any audio is made.

  • Nothing to configure

    No onboarding, no personalisation to tune, no account. Pick a voice and a language once, then never open a menu again.

The craft rules

Each bit uses exactly one comic method, never a mush of all of them. Three of the methods quote a real, cited artifact rather than inventing facts. A moderator and a set of mechanical checks catch fabricated figures, recited source text and leaked stage directions before anything is spoken — and nothing is ever aimed at a group, a body, an illness or a bereavement.

What it does not do

No account and no sign-in. Nothing to type and nothing to say out loud: it does not listen and it does not record. There is no analytics SDK and no advertising identifier, so the app collects nothing about you — which also means I cannot see how you use it.

What is missing

It is new, and it shows. There is no share button, no ratings yet, and no way for me to measure which bits land beyond people telling me. If a bit does not work, that is worth hearing about.
